Boundaries are not talked about enough when it comes to relationships. Especially as a young woman. Boundaries don’t always focus on shutting others out, they’re also about protecting what matters most: your heart, your health, and your future.
Here’s the thing about boundaries, they work best when you build them before you need them. Not in the heat of a moment, not after things have already gone too far, but ahead of time, when your head is clear and you know exactly who you are and what you value. Take some time to ask yourself the real questions: What am I okay with? What is a dealbreaker for me? What do I expect to give and receive in a relationship? You are absolutely free to answer them on your own terms.
Once you know where your boundaries are, the next step is trusting yourself to hold them. And that means listening to your gut. If something doesn’t feel right or makes you uneasy, if someone’s behavior raises a flag, don’t talk yourself out of it to be polite or to keep the peace. Your instincts exist for a reason. Honor them.
Knowing your boundaries also means knowing how to enforce them. That might look like having an honest conversation early in a relationship about your values and what you expect. It might mean walking away from a situation that doesn’t align with who you are. It might mean blocking someone who refuses to respect your no. None of those things are dramatic, they are self-protective and healthy.
One of the most powerful things you can do is get outside perspective from people you genuinely trust. A close friend, a mentor, someone who will ask you the hard questions and tell you the truth. We are not always the most objective judges of our own situations. Having a few trusted voices in your corner can bring clarity when things feel complicated or confusing.
Finally, recognize the warning signs. Someone who dismisses your feelings, pressures you past your comfort zone, or shows signs of emotional or physical control is not someone who deserves access to your heart.
You are worth protecting. Build your boundaries. Trust yourself. And know that Grace Place is always a safe, confidential space focused first and foremost on discussing your options during an unexpected pregnancy, as well as talking through difficult relationship dynamics.
